MAKE SURE YOU SLEEP WELL

MAKE SURE YOU SLEEP WELL

Sleep is essential for our body to recover.

During sleep, our immune system regenerates, cells are oxygenated, and hormones like melatonin and growth hormones are released. The decrease in heart rate during sleep allows heart cells and tissues to repair themselves. All of this allows the body to recover from the day's efforts. It strengthens against infections and possible diseases, our vision recovers, and our skin and heart rest. Melanin and serotonin are produced, which counteract adrenaline and cortisol, the so-called stress hormones. This means that restorative sleep not only counteracts the effects of stress but also helps us feel emotionally stronger and happier.

When we don't enjoy restorative sleep, either in quantity of hours or quality of sleep, we may notice the following effects:

  • Constant feeling of tiredness and lack of energy.
  • Reduced ability to pay attention and concentrate.
  • Memory failure.
  • Reduced creativity and ability to make good decisions.
  • Irritability and bad mood.
  • Vision difficulty or hypersensitivity to light.
  • Gastric problems.

What influences sleep quality? Worries and stress harm our sleep. If we are tense, feel overwhelmed, anxious, worried, or overcome by circumstances, it can affect the quality of our sleep. It can keep us awake, make it difficult to fall asleep, cause us to wake up very early, or make us toss and turn in bed.

Light and noise also influence, even if we believe we're used to them. Sunlight and darkness help our body know when it's time to sleep. That's why electronic devices with bright screens such as televisions, tablets, and smartphones can harm our rest cycle.
